This is a true story with some details changed to protect the fearful negotiator.
Here’s What Happened…
After graduating from college, a young man took a job with a company that was downsizing in a difficult economy. He had no savings and no relatives who could help him financially. He owed tens of thousands of dollars in student loans. And it took every penny of his paycheck each month to meet his expenses.
About a year after taking the job, his manager told the young man that his job was being eliminated in a reorganization. He was given the option to relocate across the country to a similar job in a new city with a much higher cost of living.
The manager told the young man that they couldn’t give him a raise and they couldn’t pay relocation expenses because the company had financial difficulties.
